President Michel Martelly played a big role in Alan Gross’s release
USAID subcontractor Alan Gross was released from a Cuban jail on Wednesday and flown to the United States. The release of Gross prompted swift changes in US policies toward the communist neighbor as President Obama announced plans to reestablish diplomatic relation with Cuba.
The Miami Herald is reporting that Haitian President Michel Joseph Martelly played a big role in obtaining Gross’s release. The Haitian leader flew to Cuba in early 2013 at the request of Florida Democratic Senator Bill Nelson to talk Raul Castro into releasing the american citizen.
President Martelly told the Herald:“Haiti is proud to have played a role in what happened today,” The Haitian leader also wishes that the US embargo on the Caribbean nation will be lifted soon.
