PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - At 12:00 am Monday morning, the People’s House, the Parliament, was reduced by 10 Senators and the entire, 96-member Chamber of Deputies leaving only 10 lawmakers, Senators who work in permanence. It has been declared by protesters that at this time they are no longer at odds with a president, but are now facing a dictator.
Monday, January 12, 2015, according to the Constitution, the 50th Legislature is supposed to be seated but the Martelly regime has managed to create a number of diversions, failures, scandals and national controversies over the past nearly four years which have resulted in no elections being organized despite 9 carnivals. With no elections, the 50th Legislature was unable to be elected and the mandates of most of Parliament ended on the second Monday of January 2015.
Michel Martelly had hoped to ‘rule by decree’, in others words, establish a dictatorship but the Haitian people have been very unwilling to accept him and his plan, rather, for the most part protests have been held to call for Tet Kale’s resignation.
